Informed Decision Making About Prostate Cancer Screening

One of the key facts that Vickers and colleagues (1) suggest presenting to patients to help them make an informed decision about prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening is that “only a small proportion of men with prostate cancer die of the disease.” We do not believe that this statement accurately conveys the proportion of deaths attributable to prostate cancer in the context of counseling men considering PSA screening.
