Update in Hematology and Oncology: Evidence Published in 2010

This update reviews hematology and oncology articles published in 2010 that we consider particularly relevant to practicing internists; these articles received a high ranking in ACP Journal Club PLUS (https://plus.mcmaster.ca/acpjc/default.aspx).
Selected hematology articles feature the use of rivaroxaban in the treatment of venous thromboembolism without an initial course of parenteral anticoagulation; evidence refuting the need for parenteral anticoagulation in patients with recurrent pregnancy loss; “real-world” evidence for the effectiveness of hydroxyurea in patients with sickle cell disease; and a study that suggests that clinicians consider fondaparinux therapy in patients with extensive superficial venous thrombosis.
